This will just be a random assortment of data and thoughts for planning the next weather balloon launch

1200 gram balloon from Amazon (or this one) We've been using 800 gram, but can't achieve 100,000 feet with that
CUSF says we can achieve 110,813 feet with a 3 lb payload, or 107,290 with 4 lb.
Hand warmers, perfect size to put behind cameras
Lightdow LD6000 camera ($42 with SD card)

 Payload Mass = 1814 grams

Balloon Mass = 1200 grams

Target Ascent Rate = 4 m/s

Burst Alt. = 32808 meters (107,638 ft)

Time to Burst = 137 min

Neck Lift = 2514 grams (5.5 lbs)

Volume = 127.8 cubic ft

(Data from habhub burst calculator)

UPDATE: (2/11/2019) FOUND!!!

Today (8/5/2017), we launched a high altitude weather balloon from Carrollton, GA. The flight followed predictions very well (except for a longer track due to less lift), until it reached 71,124 feet. At this point, the APRS telemetry fell silent several miles ESE of Fayetteville. If you live in the Fayetteville area, or near Blacksville or McDonough, please keep an eye out for a bright orange payload with a blue parachute. Below is a search map and a photo of our payload

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that the weather balloon launch that we had scheduled for this Saturday (7/29) has been rescheduled for the following Saturday (8/5). We have discovered that two APRS trackers that I have are dead. Thanks to WX4BK for spending a lot of time wrestling with the hardware problems, and thanks to WD8LQT for offering his TinyTrak to use on the upcoming flight. The next launch attempt will still be at the Hobby Lobby in Carrollton. We'll plan to meet at 9 AM on August 5 and begin preparation for launch. We'll keep you updated. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

73,
Blake - N4BWR
